Holding their Hand…..

This may be shocking….. but I am going to post something from Fox News because….. (and I can’t believe I am saying this…..) I can’t say it much better than it was said here.

*except for the part about the looters and uncovering dead. If you are in need, you are not looting… .you are surviving. And, it isn’t a show…. but about really needing us later…. well…. that couldn’t be more true.

Steve Harrigan, a seasoned war correspondent, broke down reporting from Haiti. His report sticks with me.

This devestation in Haiti rocks me. As a citizen of the world, as a member of humanity, as a mother, I want to rush to their aid, to hold that grieving mother’s hand as she wails and cries and screams.   I want to hold her close, stroke her hair,  and help her find a sliver of peace amidst the chaos.

And so I give. I give to Doctors Without Borders to support their amazing work so that one more mother may not have to lose her last child.  I give to the American Red Cross for all their efforts in providing with basic essentials. There are many credible organizations which to give for their relief efforts.

But, we must be vigilant. We must realize that this country, which was already facing abject poverty, has been brought to its knees.  This is not something that goes away after the 72 hour window for search and rescue. This will be with them for months, years. Let us not forget, even with all of our problems, to remember the people of Haiti long after the cameras have gone home. These are our fellow citizens of the world, and they need our compassion.

I wrote the other day that it is easy in our day to day lives to become complacent. We must remember to occasionally feel outrage… the kind of outrage that leads to change. The same goes with compassion. Our compassion, our help, can help the world change. Imagine… just imagine…. what we could do if we moved ourselves, our hearts, and our creativity, and our resources to action.

Please consider giving to one of these fantastic organizations lending a hand in Haiti. And remember that organization next month, and the month after that when you are working on your monthly budget. And if you have a minute, swing by my dear friend Ilina’s blog, Dirt and Noise.  She has a Haitian inspired cocktail there today, and for every comment she receives, she will donate a dollar to UNICEF and their efforts in Haiti.

Wow. I’d never have thought a Fox News correspondent could be made of anything but hate and steel but that guy just proved me wrong. Completely heart-wrenching.

I sent money to Drs without Borders. They lost all of their facilities in Haiti, and are making hospitals out of thin air.

    These guys are amazing.

These people are amazing, but you’re right and the news reporter is right… we get bored with the story too quickly.

I cry, I grieve, I wish I could be there but I know that I would not get out alive…so I donate and I pray that the world will once again lay down thier grievance and come together to help thier brothers and sisters. We must forget that we are a world of nations and see that we are one people put on this beautiful planet to love and care for each other. We will never be alone again as I watch the world heed to the call. Thank you the peple of earth for showing me that we are a human family.

So well said. The devastation in Haiti is beyond what we can fathom. Could this mean that Fox is going to transition from “hate” to what Haiti inspires?
