A Momentary Setback

I’ve been commenting off and on on this site since its launch, and it is unfortunate that my first post as an author here is to deliver bad news.  My wife – the Down to Earth Mama herself – is currently in the hospital due to a bad infection in her leg.  If all goes well, she should be back on her feet in a few days and able to catch up with things.

It started this past weekend in the form of a boil-type bump at the bottom edge of her kneecap.  While the boil itself seemed normal enough, it was a pain due to its sensitive location.  But by Monday evening, much of her kneecap was inflamed.  By Tuesday evening, her entire knee was pink and swollen and the tenderness was extending up and down her leg.  She ended up driving her self to the ER (before you glare at me, it was a sensible plan of her own design – the kids were asleep and it was too late to get anyone there to watch them while I drove her).  After drawing some blood and checking things out, the admitted her.

Today the did a biopsy to see what they were dealing with.  Neither the blood work or biopsy results are back yet, but all signs point to a strong staph infection – very possibly MRSA.  They are keeping her there for at least another day or two and administering two different antibiotics to help fight the infection.

Meanwhile, I’m taking steps to avoid things spreading or getting worse.  I spent most of the day disinfecting the majority of the house, stripping beds and shrinking as much laundry as possible (hot water wash to kill anything off).  Tomorrow the battle continues and my weekend of solo parenting just got a bit longer.

To all those anticipating seeing her this weekend at BlissDom, unfortunately she will not be coming (I also had canceling travel plans on my to do list today).  She does regret that she will miss out and hopes that another opportunity will arise to meet many of you whom she would have seen there.

If there are any significant changes to the situation, I will be sure to post an update with details.  In the meantime, keep your collective fingers crossed (I will do so myself once I’m done typing).  And hopefully beyond this situation, my future contributions on this site won’t have to be as the bearer of bad news.

Share and Enjoy:

Oh no! Please wish her a speedy recovery for me! So sorry she’s going to miss BlissDom. I can’t go, but I know how much everyone is looking forward to it.

I know you’ll be taking good care of things on the home front. (You will, right?) So she need not worry there. (RIGHT!?!?)

I’ll send out a tweet so folk will know why she’s MIA.

Oh my goodness! Please please please tell her I am thinking about her! I am so sorry this happened. Please keep us updated. Huge hugs to our down to earth mama. I am tweeting the news too. And I can’t imagine how disappointed she is about this weekend too. Healthy prayers going her way.

Thank you all for your sentiments. I assure you that I’ve got a firm grasp on the home-front. My place of work is very understanding on the matter and I’d like to think of myself of a 21st century dad (don’t mean to steal your moniker, Elliott). Good news is that Corina seems to be feeling better today. So it seems that the treatment is helping. Yesterday she couldn’t bring herself to get out of bed for anything. Today she is getting up and walking around (with a walker to avoid aggravating the situation). Thanks again. I will keep you posted. If all goes well, she may be home tomorrow.
